“600” - LEXX Release!

I met LEXX on the second or third day I lived in Nashville. We attended the same audio trade program, and made quick friends. A few years into our friendship we discovered a love of pop music together, and over the past few years we’ve been developing her sound and mine alongside each other. She’s an irreplaceable friend and this song is super special.

We started writing it a few years ago. When we write it’s pretty common for me to start by jamming on the instrumental bits while Lexie searches for some lyric part to derive the rest of the song from. Slowly, over a couple sessions this one became a clearly very personal project. With themes about familial love and pain and lost time, I love how Lexie weaved so much meaning into the verses, full of vivid images and metaphors.

The instrumental here is interesting, I feel like we were able to get those big electronic choruses to really explode from the sparseness of those down alt-pop verses. I love how the sustained bass in choruses 2 & 3 sneaks up to a couple syncopated notes to add some punch and glitchiness. Also I got to sing some vocal pads, and in CH3 I snuck one in that contains every note of the major scale. Kinda fun.

We did this one entirely together at my home studio save for mastering, which was done by Adam Grover at Sterling Sound here in Nashville, and he murdered this one as per usual. I’m proud of it and her!
